And the Winner of the Pinwheel Quilt Is. . .
November 13, 2023
Michael Wootton, a resident of Wainscott, was the lucky winner of the Wainscott Sewing Society's pinwheel quilt raffle on Friday night, the organization announced Saturday.
One thousand tickets were sold, raising $5,000 for the Sewing Society, which is charged with the upkeep of the Wainscott Chapel. The eight members who made the quilt are Barbara Ann Wilson, Barbara D'Andrea, Pat D'Andrea, Quincy Eggington, Liz Hedges, Tanya Nevins, Mary Petrie, and Joyce Walker.
More than 40 people attended the covered-dish supper on Friday night, when the raffle winner was chosen at random. Barbara D'Andrea's name was picked first, but she declined to accept the quilt, as she'd been one of its creators.
Mr. Wootton's mother, Mary Lou Wootton, was a Wainscott Sewing Society member. Also a Meals on Wheels volunteer and avid bridge player, she died of pancreatic cancer in 2003.
"I was pleasantly surprised and of course thought of my mom," Mr. Wootton, who was a candidate in last week's race for a seat on the East Hampton Town Board, said on Monday. "She would have been proud and pleased with my campaign. I have felt her presence over the last year."
